this is a letter i wrote to a magic magazine a while ago and tried mailing it thru email, but their address has "mysteriously" gone down.. so, ill share my rant here.. god these guys annoy me
I read your June/July issue, and honestly, I'm not impressed.
on the plus side, kudos for doing that article on Justin Teeman.. It is always awesome to see someone who is like me, doing magic as well.. I have Cerebral Palsy as well as Autism, so seeing another like me is awesome.
On the minus side, however.. I found your magazine severely disrespectful on several levels.
In a community where we are practicing an art that is rather beaten down, wouldn't you figure that respecting and protecting each other would be more of a paramount concern rather than bashing each other?
Yet, in this magazine, in an attempt to be "hip" "cool" and "on the edge" you repeatedly make fun of magicians who have made an actual name for themselves, and try to tear them down.
In an ironic twist, you make fun of David Blaine, then on the very next page, you advertise his magic...
I can understand not being a fan of certain magic styles (i for one, like David's magic, but his presentation is a bit too quiet for my tastes.) but I STILL RESPECT HIM. Its the same as constantly making fun of Criss Angel throughout that issue. Now, as for the personal things you've made fun of in that issue (which it is not my right to speculate on, so I won't) It isn't your business to make fun of him. Also, his professional techniques (again, not really open for speculation) are not to be torn apart and showed off to anyone reading it. You would know this if you really followed the code of being a magician.. Secrecy is number one here folks.
Also comparing David Blaine and Criss Angel is rather a retarded move, don't you think? I mean, Criss is an ILLUSIONIST, while David Blaine is a street magician.. that’s like comparing a dentist and a surgeon.. fine, their both doctors, but one is completely different than the other.
As a final point on that issue, David Blaine, although seeming to have disappeared after doing his drowned alive special, is probably still recovering. I mean, he had massive skin, kidney and liver damage after that stunt. even though he didn’t "accomplish" the stunt, I don’t see the point in making fun of him.. I mean, how many of YOU have sat in water for a week and tried to escape?
On a personal level, however, I read what I read in the magazine about Criss Angel, and being a fan of his, I didn’t appreciate anything you put in there about him, true or not. It is because of people like him that magic has resurfaced as something cool, and it's also because of him, I have started practicing magic, which has made my life much better, by improving my hand eye coordination as well as my social status.
As far as I'm concerned, you guys REALLY need to do some serious growing up and learn some respect.
I'm gonna go read Genii.. A grownups magic magazine.
